Description: 3D model of a marble statue of Asclepius. This is a marble statuette of Asclepius, the Greek god of healing and medicine, found in Pafos, the capital of Cyprus in Hellenistic and Roman times. The cult of Asclepius was introduced in the island in the late 4th century BC and was soon assimilated with the cult of the Phoenician god Eshmun, who also had healing properties. The serpent-entwined staff held by this statue identifies the figure with Asclepius. The symbol has continued to be used in modern times, where it is associated with medicine and health care. Since Cyprus lacks sources of marble, the statuette was probably imported from Greece. The statuette is part of the Department of Antiquities' (Cyprus) collection.
