Name: Mark the Evangelist
Description: This object is a wood carved gold plated icon with the depiction of Mark the Evangelist. This icon was located on the iconostasis of Faneromeni church in Nicosia. At the top of the sculpture there are embossed twigs and leaves, while at the bottom there are leaves and rosettes growing out of an embossed vase. The Evangelist is seated with an open Gospel on His legs. In front of His feet there is the representation of His symbol which is a lion. The style of this picture reflects the techniques of the Cretan painter Ioannis Kornaros. The main characteristic of his art which is also observed in this icon are the round faces with the very delicate features and the kind expressions. The object is part of the Cyprus Folk Art Museum collection.
